Hedgehogs searching for apples, mice saving the world, elephants with wings. And then tales of people who fall and rise again, who speak the language of chickens.
This illustrated volume brings together sixteen stories by Antonio Gramsci, drawn from the letters he wrote from prison between 1926 and 1934. These stories reveal a different side of Gramsci beyond the committed intellectual, offering a glimpse into his nostalgia for the happy world of childhood that “Nino” experienced in his native Sardinia. A distant island by then, where life seemed simpler and freedom had wings with which to fly.
Reading age: 7 years and up.

Two children and a host of animals are the protagonists of these tales, which Antonio Gramsci wrote for his sons, Delio and Giuliano, and for his wife, Iulca. They tell of hedgehogs searching for apples, buckets filled with crabs and tiny fish, battles between crows and owls, clever foxes outwitting farmers and defending helpless foals, games of draughts, freedom in drawing, school, and children growing up. They also tell of people who fall and rise again, while conveying the importance of understanding history. Stories to be read before bedtime.
This book is also available in Sardinian under the title S’Àrbore de s’Eritzu e Àteros Contos pro sa Bona Note.
Lettere dal carcere is a unique book—perhaps an inexhaustible one. A posthumous work, whose first edition I have before me; a family book, as it has been for many Italian families. Its history, as Francesco Giasi explains in his introduction, begins the day after its author’s death in Rome on 27 April 1937.
The first edition contained 218 letters. This edition includes 511, twelve of which are previously unpublished. It tells the deeply personal story of a body of thought shaped by competing institutional loyalties, intellectual independence, suffering, and steadfast commitment. In all its editions, thanks to—or perhaps despite—its editors, Lettere dal carcere has always appeared to readers not as a mere archival collection, but as a complete and autonomous work: a self-portrait of a living mind in the process of becoming, unfolding, and revealing its radical originality.
Cofanetto in 4 volumi: i Quaderni costituiscono un classico del pensiero politico del Novecento.
The Quaderni del carcere are a classic of twentieth-century political thought. Gramsci was, above all, a political figure, and it is within politics that the unity of his work must be sought.
Even during the years of imprisonment under the Fascist regime—which irreparably weakened his health and prematurely ended his life—Gramsci remained a “political fighter”, a great Italian intellectual, and a European reformer.
Within the communist movement, he was among the first to develop a profound critique of Stalinism and Soviet Marxism. Yet his thought transcends the historical and political horizons of his own time. Indeed, the more the years pass and the more widely his works circulate in cultural contexts far removed from those in which they were originally conceived, the more his intellectual inquiry emerges as a crossroads for some of the central questions of our age: the dilemmas of modernity, the agency of peoples, the future of industrial society, the crisis of the nation-state, and the moral foundations of politics.

Within the figure of Antonio Gramsci coexist different concerns and perspectives, yet the entirety of his theoretical work unfolds within a framework of profound continuity. This does not mean that his thought remained unchanged; on the contrary, on many issues his reasoning evolved, became more complex, explored new directions, and revised some of its initial assumptions.
In this volume, Gianni Fresu—Professor of Political Philosophy at the Federal University of Uberlândia (MG, Brazil), holder of a PhD in Philosophy from the University of Urbino, and researcher at the University of Cagliari—guides readers on a journey through the development of Gramsci’s intellectual formation and the evolution of his thought.
Cofanetto in 4 volumi: i Quaderni costituiscono un classico del pensiero politico del Novecento.
Edited by Fabio Francione and Maria Luisa Righi, this volume represents the first comprehensive collection of all of Gramsci’s musical writings identified to date in Avanti!.
Through these reviews and commentaries, readers discover how Gramsci’s enjoyment as a listener and his combative spirit as a critic did not overlap but rather complemented one another, creating an intellectual perspective that is unique within the landscape of twentieth-century music criticism.
Antonio Gramsci’s legacy remains as relevant today as ever, and it is especially meaningful for younger generations. The story of his life—lived with consistency, dignity, courage, and what he famously called “optimism of the will”—offers a remarkable coming-of-age journey.
From his adolescence in Sardinia to his years of study and political formation in Turin; from his work as a journalist to his political activity, which took him to Russia, where he would find love; from his election to Parliament to the difficult years of imprisonment during which he wrote his letters and notebooks, the life of the man who “hated the indifferent” is both compelling and deeply moving.
And, inevitably, because this is Gramsci, the story of one individual is also intertwined with History itself. It is the history that Gramsci cherished so deeply because, as he explained in a letter to his son Delio, it concerns living people and everything that concerns human beings—their ability to come together in society, to work, to struggle, and to improve themselves.
Thanks to growing international interest, the work of Antonio Gramsci is now regarded as fundamentally important across a wide range of academic disciplines. His ideas continue to be “translated”—not only linguistically but also philosophically—into contexts very different from those that were the primary focus of his own work.
Within this international landscape, Brazil stands out as one of the most dynamic and stimulating settings for Gramscian studies. Here, Gramsci’s thought has been reinterpreted and updated in original ways, shaped by the country’s distinctive cultural and social realities.
In a society historically marked by atypical forms of top-down modernisation, recurring suspensions of constitutional freedoms, and authoritarian coups, several Gramscian concepts have found remarkably fruitful analytical and political applications. The result is a creative reappropriation of Gramsci’s intellectual legacy, one that helps both to reassess Brazil’s complex colonial history and to understand the profound contradictions that continue to shape its political life today.
Gramsci vivo, together with I ricordi della madre di Mimma, Teresina, is a transcription that preserves the freshness and spontaneity of the forty conversations recorded with people who knew Gramsci personally and shared with him both political engagement and imprisonment.
The original audio recordings of these first-hand testimonies form an integral part of the House Museum, alongside the documents, photographs, and objects that make it such a valuable place of memory for visitors.
In agreement with the publisher Iskra, it was deliberately decided not to alter the original text. Instead, it has been republished in its original form, with the introductory essays by the editor and by Giuseppe Fiori serving to guide readers into the spirit and context of the work.
The final decade of the nineteenth century was a period in which Sardinia, in the midst of a severe economic crisis, witnessed the rise of a new mercantile and administrative middle class, while the traditional nobility experienced a gradual decline.
It was in this context that Francesco Gramsci moved from Ales to Sorgono with his family to take up the position of head of the local Registry Office. Sorgono was then an important town, marked by lively institutional and civic activity. Francesco and his wife, Giuseppina, lived there for six years.
Drawing on historical research, this volume reconstructs the life of the Gramsci family in Sorgono, tracing a story that inevitably intertwines with the evolution of the town itself at the turn of the twentieth century.
A carefully curated selection of photographs taken between 1921 and 1991 traces the history of the Italian Communist Party on the centenary of its founding.
The images are drawn from the recently catalogued and inventoried photographic archive of the PCI, as well as from numerous public and private archives in Italy and abroad. Alongside many previously unpublished photographs, readers will find iconic images that helped shape both the public image and self-representation of the PCI in the press and in political propaganda, together with works by some of the most important photographers of the period.
Individuals and crowds, faces and places, symbols and rituals, collective tragedies and celebrations, struggles and mobilisations involving generations of activists—all come together to offer a rich portrait of twentieth-century Italy.
Through a sequence of powerful photographs, this volume explores the history of politics by documenting and narrating the tensions, tragedies, passions, and moments of intense collective experience that shaped both Italian and global history throughout the twentieth century: Fascism, war, the Resistance, post-war reconstruction, and the profound transformations that took place between the 1960s and the 1980s.
It is difficult not to agree with Antonio Gramsci Jr. when, speaking about this book, he writes: “As the work progressed, I came to realise that the history of the Schucht family was fascinating in its own right.” Not merely as a source for shedding light on lesser-known aspects of his grandfather Antonio Gramsci’s life, but as a remarkable story in itself.
Readers are likely to share this view. More compelling than many novels, the book recounts the history of a family through a rich tapestry of interconnected personal stories, woven together by the lives, experiences, and relationships of its members.
In this volume, Mimma Paulesu Quercioli, daughter of Teresina—Antonio Gramsci’s beloved sister—recounts the story of the Gramsci household, of young Antonio, and of the women who lived in the Ghilarza of another era.
Their lives become intertwined with those of Giulia and Tatiana, women who, though physically distant, remained deeply connected to Gramsci throughout his life.
This intimate account allows readers to rediscover the emotional world that surrounded “Nino” and to become acquainted with the women who provided him with affection, support, and comfort, especially during the difficult years of his imprisonment.
This volume traces the life of Antonio Gramsci through a visual reconstruction of the places that shaped his personal, educational, professional, and political journey. It presents an iconographic chronology of one of the twentieth century’s most influential intellectuals, built through a carefully curated selection of historical photographs.
The journey begins in Ghilarza, Ales, Santu Lussurgiu, Oristano, and Cagliari, before moving to Turin, where Gramsci pursued his university studies and began his professional life. It concludes in Rome, passing through Vienna, Berlin, and Moscow along the way.
The book also features images of the Italian and European cities associated with Gramsci’s political activity and participation in congresses—some of them clandestine—including Florence, Milan, Imola, Livorno, Lyon, Lugano, Busto Arsizio, Gallarate, Cagliari, Capanna Mara, and Leningrad.
Also included are places connected to his childhood and adult holidays, such as San Serafino di Ghilarza, Bosa Marina, Arbus, and Trafoi; the locations of his imprisonment, including Rome, Milan, Ustica, and Turi; and the places where he spent his final years, between Formia and the Italian capital.
The volume concludes with photographs taken after his death, documenting the many visitors who came to Ales and Ghilarza to honour his memory.
A distinctive graphic biography told through illustrations. With a delicate, almost melancholic style, the author reimagines Gramsci as a child with untidy hair, glasses, and arms hanging by his sides.
“I am Sardinian, I am hunchbacked, and I am also a communist. After a long ordeal in prison, I shall die. My name is Nino.” With these words he introduces himself in the opening panel, followed by a sequence of scenes that retrace his ideas, reflections, struggles, and loves.
The result is a truly original book that guides readers—as if through an imagined museum, neither monumental nor celebratory—into the life, thought, and human and political legacy of Antonio Gramsci.
Although he is widely regarded as the “theorist of hegemony” and did not focus primarily on what is now called the Global South, Antonio Gramsci has become a key reference point for peoples engaged in struggles against colonial oppression.
The reason for this apparent paradox lies in a factor that has not always received sufficient attention: Gramsci was the conscious son of a poor, rural, and peripheral island, historically subjected to various forms of domination and marginalisation. Drawing on this background, and through a long process of political and philosophical development, he came to conceive human emancipation as the continuation, fulfilment, and transformation of the universal values inherent in the bourgeois revolutions.
By addressing in an original and coherent way the relationship between understanding the world and changing it, the author of the Quaderni del carcere reinterprets the question of renewing Marxism, providing analytical categories that remain essential for its conceptual development and contemporary relevance.
Inspired by the letters of Antonio Gramsci, the elegant illustrations by Francesco Del Casino bring colour and imagery to the extraordinary life of the Sardinian revolutionary. Together, they create a unified portrait that reveals the richness of his personality, the breadth of his interests, and the originality and versatility of his intellect as reflected in his correspondence.
The fairy tales, stories, memories, whimsical caricatures, and vivid snapshots collected in this volume are drawn from some of the hundreds of letters Gramsci wrote, most of them addressed to women: his mother, Giuseppina Marcias; his sister Teresina; the Russian Schucht sisters, Giulia and Eugenia; and, from 1925 onwards, Tatiana, who lived in Italy. The collection also includes letters to his two sons, Delio and Giuliano, to whom he always wrote individually.
Gramsci’s gift for storytelling, combined with a modern interest in drawing, emerged during his stay in post-revolutionary Russia, as demonstrated by the remarkable postcard of October 1922 featuring his own sketches and verses, which marks the beginning of this epistolary journey.
Underlying Gramsci’s writing—an expression of a remarkably dynamic and richly human experience—is a constant connection to images and to the concrete reality of human relationships and their history.
A portrait presented in full, “with all the pulse of blood and flesh.” These are the words with which Giuseppe Fiori introduced Vita di Antonio Gramsci, first published by Laterza in 1966.
The book’s remarkable success stems from Fiori’s ability to create, through prose of exceptional literary quality, a vivid and comprehensive portrait of the communist leader and thinker. He highlights the importance of Gramsci’s Sardinian experience in shaping both his personal development and civic consciousness, while also emphasising the originality of his thought and of the reflections contained in the Quaderni del carcere.
At the same time, the biography presents the image of a communist who was, in many respects, critical of Stalinism and aware that the Soviet model could not simply be transplanted to Italy.
A biography whose appeal and significance remain undiminished over time.
In May 1925, the Fascist regime secured parliamentary approval for the bill against Freemasonry, legislation that would come into force on 26 November 1925 and mark the beginning of the dismantling of civil liberties in Italy.
During the parliamentary debate on 16 May 1925, Antonio Gramsci took the floor to speak out against the proposed law. It was his first and only speech in Parliament. Far from being a defence of Freemasonry, it was a clear-sighted and carefully reasoned denunciation of the growing assault on freedom taking place within a Parliament that had by then become almost entirely dominated by Fascism.
The small town of Ghilarza, overlooking Lake Omodeo, is an important stop along the Gramscian itinerary connected to Antonio Gramsci’s life and memory. This publication explores the close relationship between the rural sanctuary of San Serafino, the Gramsci family, and the community of Ghilarza.
In this booklet, the Fondazione Casa Museo Antonio Gramsci has brought together letters in which Gramsci refers to the Feast of San Serafino, other religious and civic celebrations, the nearby dam on the River Tirso, and even some of the traditional foods associated with the festival, including local bread and sweets.
By evoking both the physical setting and the historical and social dimensions of San Serafino—and, more broadly, of Ghilarza—Gramsci’s words offer a contemporary perspective on a place that remains deeply symbolic for the local community, while at the same time enriching its meaning and significance.
This publication was produced to mark the centenary of the founding of the Italian Communist Party and the 130th anniversary of Antonio Gramsci’s birth.
It includes a reprint of Rinascita Sarda, the monthly magazine of politics, culture, and current affairs, issue no. 4 (April 1987), dedicated to “Gramsci and Sardinia”, together with a series of essays and contributions by Francesco Berria, Giorgio Macciotta, Giuseppe Vacca, Maria Luisa Righi, Gianni Francioni, Francesca Izzo, Gianni Fresu, and Paolo Piquereddu.
The volume concludes with reflections on Antonio Gramsci by former Presidents of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Pietro Ingrao, Nilde Iotti, and Giorgio Napolitano.
