ACCESSIBLE MUSEUM

The expansion and redevelopment works carried out as part of the Territorial Development Project Vivi BarGui! Communities, Experiences and Routes around Lake Omodeo, through the initiative “From Ghilarza to the World”: The Antonio Gramsci Museum Complex, made it possible to remove the architectural barriers previously present within the Antonio Gramsci House Museum.

Access for visitors with disabilities is guaranteed throughout all areas currently open to the public.

  • Barriers at the entrance have been removed through the installation of low thresholds and widened doorways.
  • Access to the upper floor is provided via an ELFO T vertical platform lift.
  • Movement throughout the different rooms is ensured either by continuous flooring or through the presence of ramps.
  • Restroom facilities have been adapted in accordance with Italian accessibility regulations (D.P.R. 236/1989).

At the same time as the redevelopment works, the museum exhibition layout was also completely renewed.

All rooms within the House Museum are equipped with touchscreen displays containing information about the objects, documents, and photographs on display. The screens are fitted with adjustable support arms that allow them to be lowered, raised, or tilted according to visitors’ needs.

The touchscreen displays provide direct access to icons and software without the use of complex peripheral devices, while images can also be enlarged. Audio testimonies are available within the displays and can be accessed using headphones.

By prior booking, visitors may also experience the CasaGramsci VR Experience: a virtual reality experience designed for visitors to the Antonio Gramsci House Museum in Ghilarza. Through the use of a VR headset, visitors can explore the historic interiors of Gramsci’s home in an immersive and interactive way, with carefully reconstructed environments enriched by visual and narrative content.

The experience allows visitors to discover objects, details, and testimonies connected to Gramsci’s life, including elements not physically present within the museum itself. An engaging and accessible experience that combines technology, history, and museum innovation. The experience is available in Italian, English, and Sardinian, with subtitles.

The short film Childhood and Youth of Gramsci, directed by Paolo Zucca and the Collettivo Mira collective, is also available with subtitles in Italian, English, French, and Spanish.

The CasaGramsci VR Experience and Childhood and Youth of Gramsci were created as part of the project Digitalisation of the Antonio Gramsci House Museum: Access, Enhancement and Accessibility through Inclusivity, Sharing and Sustainability, funded under the Italian National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), Mission 1 – Digitalisation, Innovation, Competitiveness and Culture, Component 3 – Tourism and Culture 4.0 (M1C3), Measure 3 “Cultural and Creative Industries 4.0”, Investment 3.3: “Capacity Building for Cultural Operators to Manage Digital and Green Transition”, Sub-Investment 3.3.2 – Support for Cultural and Creative Sectors for Innovation and Digital Transition (Action A II), pursuant to Director’s Decree No. 385 of 19/10/2022.
